Spatial wage differentials and agglomeration externalities: Evidence from Indonesian microdata

چکیده

This paper examines the sources of labor wage differentials and investigates human capital externalities across Indonesian districts. Based on microdata individual workers from 2006 to 2015, we show that, in addition (labor) characteristics, regional endowments agglomeration forces play an important role explaining variations Indonesia The results spatial proximity firms each other, market pooling, knowledge spillovers. We further found strong evidence positive externalities, particularly agglomerated regions. These findings suggest that skills are tools can be exploited by policymakers boost local productivity vis-à-vis reducing income/wage inequality.

Globalisation and Wage Differentials: a Spatial Analysis

Fujita, Krugman and Venables (FKV) develop a model in which international wage differentials encourage industrial mobility because the advantages provided by strong inputoutput linkages within high cost countries are offset by the benefits of locating in low wage economies. In this paper we argue that globalization has another important dimension. Shocks may originate in a single country but, w...

Agglomeration Economies: Microdata Panel Estimates from Canadian Manufacturing

This paper identifies the main sources of urban increasing returns, after Marshall. The geographical distance across which externalities flow is also examined. We bring to bear on these questions plant-level data organized in the form of a panel across the years 1989 and 1999. Plant-level production functions are estimated across the Canadian manufacturing sector as a whole and for five broad i...

Congestion Tolling with Agglomeration Externalities*

Consider an urban economy with two types of externalities, negative traffic congestion externalities and positive agglomeration externalities deriving from non-market interaction. Suppose that urban travel can be tolled, that non-market interaction cannot be subsidized, and that non-market interaction is stimulated by a reduction in travel costs. Then the optimal toll is below the congestion ex...

Wage Differentials in Experimental Efficiency Wage Markets

In recent years, many econometric studies have confirmed the existence of inter-industry wage differentials. Even after controlling for a large number of joband worker related characteristics, and demographic variables, large and statistically significant industry wage differences remain. Moreover, these differences exist for union as well as for non-union workers and seem to be remarkably simi...

Wage Differentials as Reputation

Equilibrium search models obtained endogenous wage differentials among identical firms and workers based on the equal profit assumption. We formulate a more fundamentally dynamic game with identical players where workers can strategically quit and firms cannot commit to future wages, and find that equilibrium wage differentials arise due to different worker expectations on the firms’ future beh...
